In all its display finery, a lovely Suffolk Punch is being walked around the
farm in eastern Suffolk. It's such a shame these magnificent working
horses are dying out as a breed, with only something 600 now left in the
world. With such a scattered species, it must be difficult breeding them in
such a way that preserves the purity of the line, without them being
in-bred (not that I know anything about animal husbandry). Where I grew
up, in semi-rural Hampshire, I can remember my parents shopping from
a fruit and veg cart that came around the houses, pulled by such a horse
as this, and in those days it may well have been a Suffolk Punch. It never
occured that that would be a sight that would so rapidly disappear, only to
be found now in picture books of 'Old England'.
