The elaborately decorated roof of the Abbey church at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. It
is said that the stone for the abbey was imported from Caen in northern France, and
was transported to its final destination up the Gipping River (the northward extension
of the Orwelll) to a suitable portage point the other side of Stowmarket. Today, you
can barely get a canoe up the Gipping for much of its length without grounding out,
so either the tale is a tall one or the river that flows past our house in Needham
Market was a much broader, deeper one in those days. Or it came up in very small
pieces, I suppose. But no matter, the interior of our nearest cathedral is one with
some of the best in the land, as can be glimpsed from this picture. Ultimately, none
compare with Salisbury or Gloucester in my view, biut that they have all survived
intact is the main thing.
