We were lucky to find this field - it's gone now, turned over to
crops. It brought a lump to the throat, reminding us of that
shattering last scene from 'Blackadder Goes Forth', and the
display of hand-made poppies that turned the Tower of London
into a sea of red on the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1.
The poppy was the right choice to represent the lost
generation, the youth indiscriminately slaughtered on the
Western Front, since poppies only appear on disturbed ground -
the way so many of the dead were interned between 1914 and
1918.
