Aside from being one of the largest commercial ports in
Europe, Felixstowe the town is perhaps one of the most
deprived in terms of investment and visitor-appeal. Like
Folkestone when it lost the cross-channel ferry route to the
Continenet when the Tunnel opened, Felixstowe never
really got over the loss of the Victorian seaside holiday
trade, so that today Felixstowe does not spring to mind
when choosing a destination for your beach holiday in
summer. Unless you live here, in which case its delicate
charm is all the more enjoyable for it not being crowded
and noisy. A stroll with the camera, towards the Ferry to
Bawdsey, produced this shot, with nothing added and
nothing taken away. The sandbar, sealing off the inner
harbour at Felixstowe Ferry, is a mere 200 yds away, not
the five miles it looks.
