Pier, Varna, Bulgaria

If it's possible to feel 'ashamed' that, as a photographer, I often went places without thinking to take a camera along, then I'm thoroughly guilty. My best friend's wedding was my first such crime.  And in seven trips to Bulgaria for various purposes (transit through to Istanbul and back, two visits during the making of a tourist video in winter and summer seasons, and three visits to buy - and later to sell - a small apartment in Varna to participate in the booming post-communist-era investment jamboree), this is the only picture that is deemed worthy of inclusion in the gallery.  It's an attractive country, spoilt on its Black Sea coast by rampant and often shoddy holiday construction, but the interior has a proud and extraordinary history, from Roman times onwards, culminating in its impoverishment during 50 years of Soviet hegemony.

Tha apartment, incidentally, in Varna town, not on the beach, yielded virtually no profit, as the global financial crash of 2008 put paid to that.  I haven't speculated on anything, nor been in a position to, since!
