...But then, not so long ago, English Heritage, or somebody, cleaned off the patina of
decades from the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens and took the colour, charm and
grandeur out of the statues. They're now shiny white, unromantic, sterile. Worse, the whole
of the base of the Albert Memorial, which includes these friezes all the way round, has been
permanently fenced off from the vulgar gaze of the public. You can't get near to your own
cultural heritage any more, to the band of sculptures that I think are the only redeeming
feature of the ugliest structure in London. The pigeons that caused many of the problems in
the first place, of course, can still get in.
