Pietà, Lille

Bronze figure (at least I assume it's bronze), a pieta of sorts on the outside door of the

Cathedral at Lille, N France. Or to give it its full name, since you may not be able to find it

otherwise, tucked away in a honeycomb of narrow streets: La basilisque-cathedrale

Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille de Lille. For a cathedral, it's as close as you can get to a modern

art gallery, with sculpture, paintings, iconography and stained glass, and where superb

interior design means a restful as well as an entertaining and thought-provoking

experience. I would make a special trip to hear an organ recital there, and follow it up with

another visit to the Palais de Beaux Arts. There's a lot to Lille, and it's so close...
