Britain
framing suggestion:
The Snowdonia region of North Wales rightly deserves its reputation as one of the most
beautiful parts of Britain. Turning off the A5 route to go through Snowdonia itself is always a
moment of keen anticipation, as you don't know what the weather is going to be like five
miles up the road. This was the scene at Llyn Padarn (Llanberis) on one visit, looking back
towards the mountains as we headed west for Caernarvon. The weather had been lovely
about ten minutes beforehand, and five minutes later we were scurrying for shelter as a
downpour started.
You can just see, faintly lit in a shaft of weak sunlight, the ruin of Dolbadarn Castle on the
eastern edge of the lake; other local attractions from here include the Dinorwic Power
Station, with its extraordinary method of generating electricity, and the National Slate
Museum, which might sound dull but is actually a fascinating and well thought-out site.
Especially when it's not raining.
