Stowmarket, in mid-Suffolk, has suffered badly over the years from undistinguished
development of the town centre and unjustified neglect of its tourist potential. For it has one
redeeming, but under-funded and often ignored (even by some Stowmarket residents),
feature: the remarkable Museum of East Anglian Life (MEAL). Its exhibits range from the
minutiae of a Suffolk Punch breeder's entire collection of equine artifacts and voice recordings,
to highly decorative Gypsy caravans, from Nissen huts full of WW2 memorabilia, and a
collection of steam engines to surviving rare livestock breeds. The estate house is now an art
gallery, and there's also a old water mill, as-yet undiscovered treasures in an archive still being
catalogued by a small army of volunteers, and centuries-worth of exhibits from what made
rural life in East Anglia 'tick'. It supplements its meagre arts funding by events throughout the
year, including jazz, beer and folk music festivals, steam rallies and many other functions. It's
the best preserved secret of mid-Suffolk, but a 'secret' it should definitely not remain.
