In Dedham Vale
Dedham Vale lies on the Suffolk border with Essex, on the river Stour, and is famous for being the subject matter of many paintings by John Constable in the first half of the 19th century. From the National Trust carpark at Flatford Mill, walk down to the mill and check out Willy Lot's cottage - still there - then stroll across the wooden bridge at the start of the delightful walk to Dedham itself for a slap up cream tea in the centre of town. Antiques shops and art galleries will detain you for a bit, or potter about on the river at the boat hire place, then walk back the way you came, getting lovely views of the river and the super-friendly cows that just wander round the place and stand in the river to cool down. If you love horses, the Alfred Munnings museum and art gallery is very close, and well worth a visit.
