One advantage of getting up early to get the shot you want (not that I'm in the
habit of it) is that there are usually no other distractions, no temptations to
wander off and shoot something else. When I got to the Charles Bridge in Prague
on this glorious spring day it was dotted with Japanese photographers, all waiting
for the same dawn shot, all walking up and down, their Nikons with tripods
dangling, wondering (presumably) where the sun was coming up.I couldn't
converse with any of them, as the sum total of my Japanese was wholly derived
from Kurosawa samurai films, most of which wpuld not have been appropriate at
that hour. The suddenly, they were all gone - their coach had turned up and
they were off to Vienna or somewhere. They'd all missed the dawn, except
perhaps from the coach. They'd got distracted.
