framing suggestion:
The pub at the bottom of the hill after turning left at Chelmondiston, on the Shotley
peninsula. This hostelry is one of a number of favourites in Suffolk (and they're all
old), including The Dog at Grundisburgh, the Railway at Framlingham, the Low
House at Laxfield (properly known as the King's Head) and the Fox at Newbourne.
I don't know what happened to pubs in general some years ago (perhaps it was
the clampdown on drink-driving regulations), but the food standard suddenly
seemed to go through the roof. Good pubs became restaurants with booze. With
the exception of some of the 'chain' pubs, you can now expect an excellent meal
with your pint. We haven't been to a 'proper' restaurant for years, except abroad
where they haven't got pubs. The corollary to this is that the pub crawl (aided and
abetted by the rising price of a pint) seems to be a thing of the past, at least in
rural areas where you usually have to drive to the venue. But if you drive to the
Butt and Oyster, you may have to park half a mile away - it's that popular!
