framing suggestion:
The original north wall of St Mary's of Huntingfield in Suffolk has survived for
over a thousand years. The decoration on the later roof interior did not
survive at all until one Mildred Holland, wife of the vicar in the late 1850s
decided, with no previous experience, to have go at restoring it. She must
have been a very determined lady, because the astonishing result, after
about four years of labour, is what we see today, now fully conserved and
preserved for posterity. Every inch of the single hammerbeam roof and all
the angels on the beam-ends have been meticulously re-created. Sadly,
Mildred lapsed back into the obscurity from which she seems to have come,
nothing else being known about her life before or after. We don't,
apparently, even know what paints she used, which must have made the
conservation of her work a bit of a gamble.
