The tide was out, again, at Pin Mill, one of our favourite spots in Suffolk, so a walk in
the adjacent woods was a good idea until the pub opened. Well, at least it was good
exercise for the dog. Head south from Ipswich onto the Shotley peninsula and turn
left at Chelmondiston for the narrow lane leading to the Butt and Oyster and the
Orwell Estuary. But get there early if you expect to be able to park! You will be
rewarded with a scene straight out of the 1950s, with scruffy boatyards, kids paddling
in the river fishing for minnows, higgledy-piggledy houseboats, the distant sound of
Glenn Miller on someone's radio. No B17s coming back from Dusseldorf, though, but
the beer's better, and you're not likely to forget your day at Pin Mill...
