Early patrol, Snowdonia
If you don't read this text, you won't know that I'm admitting to this being a composite picture, just in case anyone thinks it may be genuine! The two components - the aircraft and the landscape - are my own pictures, and there were Spitfire squadrons stationed in North Wales during the war years, but it may be somewhat fanciful to imagine they were ever seen in exactly this location at this height! However, it's a popular picture among Spitfire enthusiasts, so if they don't care, why should I worry? I simply put the two together to create an intriguing, romantic image that could have been. When I'm not tinkering with pictures or updating this website with my latest output, I'm currently building a 3ft-wingspan Mk9 Spitfire as a weathervane, to sit atop the shed, and to mirror the occasional Spitfire we see in the skies above East Anglia participating in an aerial display somewhere. To boys of a certain age the sight still sends a tingle up the spine, especially if you can also hear that Merlin engine purring.
