The walled city of Volterra, Tuscany, home to
the Italian alabaster industry and a centre of
the ancient Etruscan people. This is a side alley
off the main shopping street. With these
ancient Italian towns and villages, you have to
be lucky with the light - it may only shine in
these narrow passages for half an hour a day,
or, in some I've seen, not at all, probably.
This picture has a flavour of the 'Ansel Adams'
about it - striking light, strong contrast, detail
in the shadow and highlight areas, good - I
hope - composition. It may not be worthy of
the great man, but then it wasn't taken with a
10 x 8 plate camera and I'm not Ansel Adams.
I may have been sarcastically referred to as
'Ansel Adnams' occasionally, after the local
brewery for whose product I have a certain
fondness, but that, alas, is as close as I get.
