It's very difficult to shoot anything in Venice that hasn't been done a billion times already, and
I'm sure this picture is no exception. But the perspective is unusual, being a long-focus shot
from the front of a vaporetto towards the Salute at the bottom end of the Grand Canal. I
could happily spend a week in Venice just riding up and down the Grand Canal's ferries - the
vaporetti - and over to the Lido for a stroll on the Adriatic beaches, and to the islands in the
lagoon for a little culture now and then. And, perversely, I'd enjoy it all the more if I didn't
have a camera with me. The demand to use a camera imposes its own limitations on your
experience, as it did in Alaska when we were filming the humpback whales in Glacier Bay. I
effectively missed the experience by having my mind wholly given over to the filming of it,
despite the fact that this particular pod were only yards from the boat we were in. As far as
whales go, only that one opportunity occurred for me; but Venice will be there (hopefully)
whenever I get around to it. Without a camera. Or not.
