Britain
framing suggestion:
The 1951 Festival of Britain, which saw the birth of the South Bank arts complex (the Royal
Festival Hall - on the left here -, the National Theatre and eventually the National Film
Theatre), originally also had what was called the 'Skylon', a futuristic rocket-shaped pointy
thing that stood roughly between the Festival Hall and where the London Eye now stands.
This picture contains three present-day iconic landmarks of London: the Festival Hall, home
now to three orchestras, the London Philharmonic, the Philharmonia and the period ensemble,
the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment; the 'Eye'; and the Houses of Parliament, across
the river. Four if you include the Thames itself. On a summer's evening, as here, there is
nothing finer than a stroll along this embankment, taking in a drink at one of the many
watering holes, browsing the outdoor second-hand bookshop outside the Film Theatre and a
quick snack before your concert starts. Then home by riverboat, if you're lucky.
