The Red Arrows, Britain's pre-eminent
(RAF) aerial display team operate out of
RAF Scampton, as a home base, and
Boscombe Down, the RAF's
long-established research and
development base in Wiltshire. This is
also the location of the Empire Test
Pilots' School, where the best of the
world's military and commercial pilots
are trained to within an inch of their
pension fund. I thought I knew a little bit
about how an aeroplane flew, but in
the course of attending a couple of lectures there whilst shooting a film on the School
itself, I didn't understand a single word. And why would I? - these guys could probably
take an entire Typhoon attack aircraft to pieces and re-assemble it again without
leaving out any bits. I couldn't do that with an Ikea wardrobe. This is why we have the
best trained and most exceptional pilots in the world, and why the Red Arrows are the
best of the best.
