Interior, farmhouse at Nelson's Farm,
Ashbocking, Suffolk. The owner had been
desperately trying to get planning
permission to restore the buildings on this
once-important farm in mid-Suffolk, but
had been repeatedly turned down on (it
seemed to me) spurious grounds whilst the
place fell down around him. Holes in the
roof, storage barn torched in a nasty local
dispute, pond overgrown with weeds,
outbuildings abandoned and wind-swept... He graciously allowed me to photograph the
interior of the now-uninhabitable farmhouse that he'd inherited, untouched for many a
year. It could almost be preserved as a snapshot of Suffolk from 50 years ago. Passing
the farm a few weeks ago, I noticed a new roof had gone up, but also a 'For Sale' sign.
This is the shot after I'd given the original an antique tone in Perfect Photo Suite 7, plus
a severe vignette to keep the eye focussed on the old pram. I then gave it an additional
'Grunge vignette dark', also in PPS7, to make the place look even more unloved. I'm not
sure that I haven't actually overdone it with this last effect, but it reflects the gritty
squalour of the place as I found it.
